More than 60 colourful floral arrangements go on show at St George's, Brede, this weekend when the church holds its annual Flower Festival.

The Festival is now in its 29th year.

This year's theme is "The Church Year at Brede" and the displays will include arrangements depicting Christmas, Easter, St. George's Day and Mothering Sunday.

The origins of the Flower Festival date back
to 1977 when some townsfolk from Fécamp in Normandy France visited the Church because the then Rector, Canon Peter Harvey, was re-establishing links with St. George's founding Abbey of Fécamp.

The Church itself dates back to between 1031 and 1035
There is a story that Captain Hook in J M Barrie's Peter Pan was said to have been based on a Rector of St. George's – the Rev. John Maher – who, allegedly before becoming a priest, was a pirate.

Steve Edwards, from the church, said: "Brede Flower Festival relies on those who live in the Parish or who have or have had some connection with the Parish.

This year Sylvia Butler has taken back the organisation of the arrangements and is being assisted by Betty May and Sheila Bristow.

"Last year we had hundreds of visitors both from the UK and overseas, including America, Australia and Southern Africa. Everyone keeps saying that it gets better each year.
