Rye MP Michael Foster has hit out at employers who flout the law by paying less than the minimum wage.
The MP says concerns have been raised by residents that some local companies may not be paying their employees the National Minimum Wage.

He says he is keen that employees should get what is legally theirs and he is encouraging any employee who i
s unsure to contact the National Minimum Wage Helpline on 0845 6000 678.

Mr Foster said: "It has been alleged that some companies are paying their staff as little as £1.98 an hour, and failing to pay National Insurance for their employees. That is completely unacceptable."

"I know sometimes employees are anxious that they may face losing their job if they complain, but you can contact the Helpline in confidence and help will be given to you to claim any back pay owing. Action may be taken against your employer if they have been breaking the law.

"If other residents are aware of employers behaving in this way I would also encourage them to contact HM Revenue and Customs at the same number, again in confidence.

"If enough people complain then we can stamp out this kind of behaviour. After all, it does not only affect those workers who are living on less than the minimum wage – it also affects the "good" employers who abide by the law and who face unfair competition as a result."
