THE stage is set for what should be an afternoon of celebration for rugby in the area this weekend.
Hastings & Bexhill are set to be crowned Sussex League champions and earn promotion to London South East Division Four for the first time in 15 years tomorrow (Saturday).
The champagne corks will be cracked open at around 4.45pm provided that H&B av
oid defeat at home to second-bottom Pulborough.
Captain Kit Claughton said: "I'm hoping it will be a really good spectacle, but I'm sure Pulborough will want to come down and spoil the party."
H&B have taken themselves to the brink of the Division One title courtesy of a 10-match unbeaten league run which stretches back to November.
They have lost only one of their 17 league games in total and haven't been beaten on their own ground in a league fixture for two years.
H&B have also won all of their last eight league meetings with tomorrow's opponents since a 7-3 reverse away from home on December 7, 2002. The last of these was a 34-17 success in West Sussex during December, seven days after the encounter was originally abandoned due to the unsafe nature of the pitch.
Pulborough have lost 13 of their last 14 league assignments, including a 23-0 setback at home to second-placed Horsham a fortnight ago. But they did take third-placed Heathfield & Waldron to extra-time in the semi-finals of the Sussex Shield earlier in 2007.
"Pulborough have got some really good individuals, especially in their back line, and they are certainly not second-from-bottom material," warned Claughton.
Although victory is the only thing on H&B minds, a draw would be sufficient because their points difference of +520 is vastly superior to the +320 of Horsham.
If the unthinkable of H&B losing and Horsham winning at home to seventh-placed Crawley were to happen, the local club would at least get a second bite at the promotion cherry. But that second chance would come in the form of a play-off against the runners-up in Kent Division One, a showdown they have lost in five of the last six seasons.
The hard ground has left Ben Arnold and Roger Roberts doubtful with hamstring injuries.
There are also concerns over Ben Davies (neck) and Tom Brampton (knee), while Tristan Todd is still struggling with a knee problem and Paul Sandeman (broken jaw) is definitely out.
David and Paul Northen will return, however, for a contest which will get under way at William Parker Sports College from 3pm.
H&B's special guest on the day will be Bob Rogers, president of the Rugby Football Union.
