Another semi-final exit for Towse
Jake Towse suffered semi-final heartache for the second successive year in boxing's CYP Championships on Sunday.
The West Hill teenage talent lost 8-5 on points to Lloyd Johnson (Golden Ring ABC, Southampton) in the last four of the class C (birth years 1991 and 1992) under-60 kilos division.
West Hill's head coach Dave Bishop said: "Whether the occasion got to him I don't know, but it wasn't the Jake we all know. He just didn't seem to have his full sharpness there and couldn't get his shots off."
A very slick and physically strong Johnson got his tactics spot on, countering strongly every time Towse came in. Towse came back towards the end of the fight in Haslemere, Surrey, but it was too late to affect the outcome.
Towse's loss capped a disappointing weekend for the Whitefriars Road club after Barry Buchanan endured an early exit from the Senior ABA Championships the previous day.
Bishop felt Buchanan had done enough to win his Southern Counties light middleweight (71 kilos) semi-final against Mark Coombes (Portsmouth University) only to be on the wrong end of a majority points decision.
