Bexhill Cricket Club’s excellent form was brought to a halt by bogey side Preston Nomads on Saturday.

A terrific 84 with the bat from Dean Crawford and Joe Cox’s three wickets with the ball couldn’t prevent Bexhill’s three-match winning run coming to an end.

At what must be the most picturesque ground in the Sussex Premier League with the South Downs as a backdrop, Bexhill won the toss and elected to bat.

With the sun beating down, Bexhill soon hit trouble at 21-3 before Crawford got the visitors’ score up past 150 to claim four batting points.

The Australian displayed a mixture of stubborn defence and an array of good shots all around the ground, hitting two sixes and nine fours in 113 balls.

Despite being felled second ball by a vicious bouncer which damaged his grille, captain Johnathan Haffenden was the next highest scorer with 15 as Bexhill were all out for 159 - at least 25 runs short of a working total.

Bexhill fought hard and gave everything in the field, and with Nomads 86-4 and 114-5, the visitors had a sneak of a chance before Nomads got away to win by four wickets.

Fifteen-year-old Ethan Guest held a spectacular one-handed catch over his head running backwards, while Cox was the pick of the bowlers with a season’s best 3-25 in nine overs.

Once again Bexhill managed to take wickets (Josh Beeslee picked up two and Shawn Johnson one), but just did not have enough runs to get a result.

Standings (played 15 matches unless stated): 1 East Grinstead 347pts, 2 Preston Nomads 323, 3 Roffey (14) 321, 4 BEXHILL 302, 5 Horsham 295, 6 Billingshurst 244, 7 Brighton & Hove 229, 8 Cuckfield 226, 9 Eastbourne 207, 10 Middleton 196.
