Campbell keeps the Priory hopes alive

HASTINGS Priory kept alive their faint hopes of hauling in the Sussex Cricket League leaders with a maximum points success at home to Steyning on Saturday.

This really was a must-win match for Priory as they bid to rein in the likes of Brighton & Hove and title favourites Eastbourne at the top of the Premier Division.

George Campbell was the star of the show with a devastating all-round performance. Back home for a few weeks from his teaching job in Switzerland, Campbell bagged 4-29 in an unusual role as a bowler for someone who normally keeps wicket to help reduce the visitors to 223 all out. Keagan Africa also performed well with the ball to return figures of 3-54.

In reply, Campbell hit an undefeated 129 as Priory finished on 226-7 with victory being secured in the penultimate over of the day. James Beeny followed up his superb century in the previous week's league match with a useful 34.

This result saw Priory move up to fourth in the table but still 65 points adrift of leaders Brighton who have played one game more. Second-placed Eastbourne have two games in hand on the top dogs.

Bexhill slumped to a four wicket defeat away to new Division Two leaders Chichester Priory Park. The visitors were dismissed for 183 with Fazal e Akbar snapping up 5-66 and skipper Danny Oliver 4-13.

Richard May (55) and Jonathan Haffenden (47) topped the Bexhill scoring. Haffenden also claimed 4-61 with the ball as Chichester finished on 189-6.

The Division Two match between Roffey and Sidley was abandoned due to the bad weather.
