Rye United chalked up a crucial win in their title bid on Saturday.

The Quarterboys came from behind to win 2-1 away to Redhill on a day when fellow Sussex County Football League Division One high-flyers Pagham and Lancing also triumphed.

Rye got off to the worst possible start by falling behind to a penalty after 52 seconds, but Scott Ramsay equalised in the 74th minute and Phil Rhodes popped up with the winner 11 minutes later.

Scott Price’s side is six points clear of Lancing having played an extra game, seven ahead of Pagham having played two more matches and 12 better off than Three Bridges having played six more times.

Lancing were 3-0 winners away to a Sidley United side whose manager John Lambert was fuming with his team’s performance. Two of the goals came in the first half and third was early in the second period.

It was a better weekend for the area’s Division Two teams. Jack Aston struck in either half to give Bexhill United a 2-0 victory away to Wick in Darrol Parris’ first match in sole charge.

An Adam Smith goal earned fifth-bottom Little Common a 1-1 draw at Littlehampton Town, while Sam Willett, Joe Barham and Gordon Cuddington netted to give fourth-bottom Westfield a 3-1 success away to Mile Oak.
