Emanuel retains NCAA mile title

Lee Emanuel continues to excel on the other side of the Atlantic.

The middle distance runner has retained his national mile title with a superb run at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The win meant he became the first athlete from the University of New Mexico (nicknamed Lobos) to win back-to-back NCAA (National Collegiate) crowns.

Just as he did the previous year, the St Leonards runner made a strong move out of the pack to take over the lead with 800m to go. This time, however, the field wilted behind the blistering pace as he ran the final three laps unchallenged.

He crossed the line in 3.59.26 - 2.37 seconds ahead of the runner-up - with his now trademark extended arms victory pose.

Less than two hours later, Emanuel was back on the starting line at Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the 3,000 final. A slow early pace forced him to make several energy-taxing surges out of traffic and into the lead pack which eventually caused him to fade and finish 12th in 8.19.35.

Earlier this year, Emanuel broke his PB by running his second sub-four minute mile with a superb 3.57.62 at the Indiana Relays Invitational Mile, and last month clinched a hat-trick of gold medals at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Prior to that, he was named University Athlete of the Year and claimed a silver medal in the 1,500m at the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham while back home.

As well as furthering his athletics career in the States, the former William Parker Sports College student and Hastings Athletic Club member, whose family live in Carinus Gardens, is finishing off a masters degree in sports administration.
