Despite missing a host of regular players, Little Common’s footballers returned from Ringmer with a well-earned point following a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Dave Ammoun gave Common a first half lead, but they had to settle for their first draw of the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One season after Ringmer equalised in the closing quarter-of-an-hour.

Shooting down the slope, the hosts began the brighter of the two teams, delivering a number of crosses into the box to test the Common back four, but without troubling Matt Cruttwell in the Common goal.

Common gradually grew into the game and began to enjoy more possession as the first half wore on. Paul Feakins saw a side-footed effort just clear the post before Will Spice tested the home goalkeeper with a long range shot.

Ringmer continued to look dangerous from set-pieces, but the Commoners dealt well with the aerial presence of recent Ringmer signing Dom Clarke.

It was Common who opened the scoring in the 34th minute. A Russell Eldridge free kick was headed high into the air and back towards the goalkeeper, who was only able to push it onto the crossbar, and Ammoun was on hand to head into an empty net.

Spice - who scored Common’s extra-time winner in their Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup victory away to Eastbourne United AFC four days earlier - almost doubled Common’s lead following neat play from Lewis Hole, but his attempted flick was blocked by the goalkeeper’s legs.

The second period was a more end-to-end affair with both teams looking dangerous on the break.

Cruttwell made a super save low down to his left following a scramble in the area, while at the other end, a neat one-two between Hole and Jared Lusted saw the latter force a smart save from the home stopper. Spice also saw an effort flash past the post following a clever flick from Hole.

Ringmer almost equalised when their forward lifted the ball over Cruttwell on the edge of the area, but Jake Sherwood was on hand to clear off the line.

The equaliser did come with 13 minutes remaining when Jack Robinson headed in off the post following a cross from the left.

The Commoners almost snatched victory in the dying minutes when Lusted found Billy Trickett on the edge of the area, but his goalbound effort was blocked and then cleared to safety.

Common: Cruttwell, Sherwood, Lusted, Brown, McEniry, Eldridge, Feakins (Holden), Ammoun, Hole, Trickett, Spice (Crone).
