A former Hastings Priory cricketer was in action against England this week.

Chris Morris, who was Priory’s overseas player in 2008, was part of the South Africa A side which faced an England XI in a three-day match at Pietermaritzburg.

Morris scored 21 batting at number eight during South Africa’s first innings and then took the new ball when it was England’s turn to bat.

England won the game by an innings and 91 runs, rattling up 414-6 declared in between bowling the hosts out for 136 and 187. Alastair Cook and Joe Root both hit centuries for the tourists.

The 28-year-old Morris has played in eight One Day Internationals and four Twenty20 Internationals for South Africa, including a Champions Trophy semi-final against England in 2013.

Morris, a right-arm fast medium bowler, took 31 league wickets for Priory at an average of 24.23 with a best of 5-8 against Brighton & Hove. He also scored 402 runs at an average of 40.2, including a superb 113 against Stirlands.

He isn’t the first Priory player to represent South Africa because Morne van Wyk played in 13 One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals between 2003 and 2011.
