H&B bid to avenge heavy defeat
Hastings & Bexhill Rugby Club will be gunning to avenge a heavy defeat tomorrow (Saturday).
H&B travel to Folkestone in round three of the RFU Senior Vase having lost 46-5 away to the same opposition on the opening day of the London Three South East season.
The Kent club currently sits eighth in the table after ending its five-game losing streak with a hard-fought 8-3 win at home to Crowborough in the wind and rain on Saturday.
H&B are second-from-bottom of the standings, five points worse off than Folkestone with a game in hand, but buoyed by a 17-17 draw at Horsham in their last outing a fortnight ago.
Captain Roger Roberts said: "Going off their (Folkestone's) website they've really struggled with a lot of their first team getting injured so I'm quite looking forward to going over there."
Richard Brooks is expected to return, but Anthony Roche is still not available and George Cullingford is going to be missing for a few weeks.
Rye Rugby Club, meanwhile, will turn its attention to the Sussex Shield tomorrow buoyed by a long-awaited first victory of the season.
The 17-6 defeat of Seaford last weekend may not have been enough to lift Rye off the foot of the table in Division One of the Sussex League, but it should boost confidence going into the first round trip to Newick.
"We're looking forward to the game," said Rye player-manager Tony Pierce who scored one of the three tries which secured victory in horrendous weather conditions at New Road.
"What a difference a week makes," he went on. "We've been playing well enough to have won before but hopefully we can go on a little bit of a roll."
Newick lie mid-table in the Sussex Intermediate League - the division below Rye - after winning four and losing four of their opening eight fixtures. Most recently, they were beaten 13-3 away to Norfolk Arms.
Rye are likely to be without full-back Jamie Moore who had to come off against Seaford after suffering an ankle injury.
Finally, Cinque Ports take on University of Chichester in the Sussex RFU Spitfire Plate at The Grove tomorrow, kick-off 2pm.
