Hastings Athletic Club achieved some terrific results at the Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships on Saturday.

Eight runners from the local club represented Sussex in the high class national event at Cofton Park, Birmingham, which rounded-off an excellent cross-country season for Hastings AC.

Maya Ramnarine rounded-off a phenomenal first cross-country campaign with another good run to finish 31st and first Sussex competitor in the under-13 girls’ race.

Isaac Elam was a solid 51st and second Sussex finisher in the under-13 boys’ event, and James Crombie was roughly halfway in 149th.

Ellen Crombie also had a solid race to come 59th in the under-15 girls’ standings, with Harmony Cooper, who is at the bottom of the age group, around halfway in 151st.

Marcus Ramnarine was 209th in the under-15 boys’ race, an event in which Sussex came third in the team results, while Josephine Edmunds was 221st in the under-17 girls’ race.

Coming off the back of his victory in the previous weekend’s Eastbourne Half Marathon, Rhys Boorman was a solid 92nd in the senior men’s race and the Sussex team achieved its highest ever position in that event of fifth.

Conditions were bitterly cold, but sunny as the runners tackled a course which contained a mixture of some very wet patches and some very dry areas.

The following day, two Hastings Athletic Club members tackled the Lydd 20-mile race in sunny but breezy conditions. Paul McCleery clocked 2:15.00 and Jason Johnstone crossed the line in 2:30.04 on the pancake flat rural course.

Several runners from the club also fared well in the latest Hastings parkrun 5k seafront event on Saturday morning. None more so than the in-form Riz Maslen, who set a new course record for the women’s over-50 age group with a very good time of 19:41.
