Mountain biker to take on the world

A downhill mountain bike racer from Battle is gearing up for the 2010 season after a great 2009.

Oliver Burton, who has lived in the town for six years, competed in several different series, including the Caersws Cup in Wales and National Points Series, in the UK senior category.

He won all the regional races, as well as gaining two firsts and two seconds in the national series to be crowned overall senior champion. Oliver won the Southern and English Championships.

For his last race of the year, the 20-year-old travelled to Portugal to compete in the final round of their national series and was the overall winner out of some 300 competitors.

This win gave Oliver the necessary UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) points to race in the 2010 Mountain Bike World Cup series. Between September and April each year he trains for the next season.

This year Oliver has spent considerable time working on his fitness, an area he feels is very important as some of the World Cup tracks are a lot longer and rougher than most UK tracks.

Oliver has also been doing a lot of riding to improve technique and style but, more importantly, speed. He is going over to Spain for a couple of weeks for some pre-season training as the terrain is mountainous and challenging.

His main focus this year is on the World Cup series and the National series. He aims to finish in the top 80 in the Worlds and win the UK national series again.

Oliver will also compete in various rounds of the IXS Downhill Cups and Maxxis Cups (both European competitions) and the Portuguese nationals, plus the Southern English Championships.

He has just been promoted to the UK expert category by British Cycling but will be competing in the elite category outside the UK.

To continue to travel all over the world representing his country, he requires sponsorship and support to help cover the costs of the season.

Any company or individuals who would be willing to help in any way should contact Oliver on (01424) 775592 or 07895 146839 or by email at olieburton@hotmail.co.uk. Alternatively, visit his new website at www.oliverburton.co.uk
