Bexhill Giants will be in action for the first time this year when they face Worthing D&D in the Sussex Basketball League at Bexhill Leisure Centre tonight (Friday).

The Giants, who top the table with a 100 per cent record after nine matches, hope to start 2012 as they finished 2011, but know they are now a major scalp as every team wants to have bragging rights as the first one to beat them.

Unfortunately, the Giants will start the second half of the campaign without three key players. Two of the squad are out due to work commitments, while influential power forward Roman Hrypinyak is sidelined for six weeks through injury. As a consequence, the bench looks a little depleted.

Despite these setbacks, the Giants are confident they can maintain their challenge for a league and County Cup double, providing they keep the nucleus of the team together and avoid further injuries.

Giants chairman Eric Douglin said: “This has been a great start to the season but we haven’t won anything yet. We are now on every team’s radar as their big fixture and if we continue this unbeaten run, every match will get harder.

“There is no room for complacency, and thinking we can just turn up and beat teams. The players and coaches have worked hard to get where we are and we want it to continue. We would just like to see lots of spectators coming to watch us play and hopefully cheer us to the title.”

Tonight’s match starts at 8.30pm and admission is free.
