Parks league not panicking yet

East Sussex Football League fixtures secretary Kevin Bray insists he’s not panicking just yet, despite the harsh winter weather putting paid to a number of games again last weekend.

Just seven league fixtures were fulfilled across the seven divisions, with two cup games also played. That means a huge total of 232 matches have now been cancelled this season, making it the worst for postponements since the 2000/2001 campaign.

A league meeting is due to take place tonight (Thursday) to discuss plans going forward, though there are no plans to scrap any cup competitions as yet.

“Some of the minor cups may be put on the backburner until nearer the end of the season,” Bray admitted. “But at the moment we still have time. We have 15 Saturdays still to play with, as well as hopefully Easter Monday. Midweek games will then likely be added to those.

“The problem is nobody knows how long the cold snap might last. Hopefully things will soon pick up, and games will start to be played again.”

The weather has left Bray more concerned for some teams than others, with teams such as Division Two leaders Crowborough Athletic III having just seven league fixtures remaining. Contrastingly, Westfield III, of Division Five, have 16 still to play, as well as being involved in two cup competitions.

The league made December 22 available for fixtures when usually a festive break would have begun, yet just one game was played - on an all-weather pitch in Eastbourne. This had been the case the previous weekend too.
