Price: We have players for title bid

Scott Price believes Rye United have the players to mount a title challenge.

Rye are fourth in the fledgling Sussex County Football League Division One table and have supplemented an already formidable squad with four quality signings since the campaign got under way earlier this month.

All four have come from Hastings United with the arrivals of Liam Upton and Jono Richardson last week being followed by Josh Pelling and Rhys Whyborne this week.

Rye manager Price said: "I've got the players there definitely, but probably like any manager would say, it all depends on injuries and suspensions to key players, and how we adapt to playing with each other. It's a new team from last year and it does take a while."

Ball-playing defender Whyborne, who had a spell at Rye several years ago when they were last a force in Division One, played at right-back in the 1-0 win away to Ringmer on Tuesday night.

Former Brighton & Hove Albion scholar Pelling, who was once part of the same successful William Parker Sports College team as Jack Dixon, Ben Radley and Upton, was an unused substitute against Ringmer.

"That wasn't an easy one," Price said. "Josh is probably the best 'keeper in the County League - I think he's that good - but Fossie (Dan Foster) has kept four clean sheets in five games now."

Rye have picked up 10 points from a possible 15 so far, and with the wealth of attacking talent at their disposal, a record of three consecutive clean sheets is ominous for the rest of the division.

Next up for Rye tomorrow (Saturday) is a trip to Chichester City followed by another away game against struggling Eastbourne United AFC on Tuesday night.

Scott Ramsay should be fit after missing the Ringmer match through injury, while Jack Dixon is expected to return after Price left him out of the midweek squad as punishment for his red card for foul and abusive language in the 1-0 win at Redhill on Saturday.
