Roberts: H&B too good to go down

Roger Roberts believes Hastings & Bexhill are too good to go down after their stirring performance last weekend.

H&B were on the brink of a stunning upset against fourth-placed Charlton Park in London Three South East before a last gasp penalty condemned them to a heartbreaking 10-8 defeat.

Roberts, H&B's captain, said: "I've always said we've got the talent, we've got the skill, it's just at what time it shines through. It's where we need to be, I think we're too good to go down.

"We should've beaten them. The initial disappointment on the day is bad, but I think the guys deep down are over the moon about it and the confidence will be there."

H&B remain in the anticipated final safe spot of fourth-bottom, a point above third-bottom Park House with two games in hand and five remaining.

The first of those catch-up matches will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at home to Horsham in a fixture brought forward from April 24 to replace the previously advertised trip to Crowborough (now April 3).

Sixth-placed Horsham were thumped 66-5 at home to second-placed East Grinstead last weekend having hammered rock-bottom Old Gravesendians 57-0 away from home seven days previously. H&B drew 17-17 at Horsham in November.

"We've got three games I think we can pull off a victory in and this is one of them," continued Roberts. "I think we're in with a good shout definitely."

Bruce Steadman is injured and recent signing Tom Muskett is away for the weekend, but H&B otherwise expect to field a similar side to last weekend. Kick-off at William Parker Sports College is 3pm.

H&B's revised remaining fixtures: tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham (h), March 20 Old Gravesendians (a), March 27 East Grinstead (h), April 3 Crowborough (a), April 10 Folkestone (h).

Rye Rugby Club, meanwhile, is in friendly action at home to Kent outfit Ash tomorrow (Saturday, kick-off 3pm).
