Silver lining for Candy in US
Frances Candy has won a global tennis silver medal for the second successive year.
The St Leonards-based talent was part of the Great Britain over-55 women’s team which came second in the 2012 Seniors World Team Championships.
As was the case in New Zealand last year, Great Britain were beaten in the final of the Maureen Connolly Cup by a formidable United States side which was playing on home soil in San Diego.
Seeded two, Great Britain were drawn in Group B and began with a 3-0 win over Ireland last Tuesday. Candy saw off Roberta Holtby 6-1, 6-2 in the number one singles.
They made sure of topping the three-strong group with an identical victory over Germany the following day. Candy was pushed slightly harder this time, but still won 6-3, 7-5 against Margreth Beyer.
Great Britain had little problems coming through their semi-final against France last Thursday, winning six sets out of six for another 3-0 success. Candy outgunned Benedicte Le Grand 6-2, 6-2.
But the final last Friday was an altogether different story as Great Britain lost 2-1 to the United States after winning only three games in the two singles rubbers. Candy lost 1-6, 0-6 to Diane Barker.
