Cricket manager Mark Robinson says Sussex’s staff and players must spend the winter focusing on how they can come back a bigger and better team after relegation.

They were sent spinning into division two of the LV county championship by a last-day defeat at Yorkshire, which sealed their fate after Hampshire had pulled off an amazing escape from the brink by winning at Notts.

Sussex won three of their first five LVCC games this season but soon lost form and got sucked into the battle to survive – although did look reasonably safe with a couple of games to go.

Robinson told BBC Sussex: “It is not the end of the world and that is the key. In the winter we will be looking how every single one of us can come back bigger and better.”

He added: “We are all emotional because we are passionate and care for our supporters and players. But we need to make sure we give ourselves space so all the decisions we make are for the good of Sussex so we can rebuild and come back stronger.”

Robinson went on: “We have to congratulate Yorkshire and take our hat off to Hampshire, with a great rearguard action and three wins from the last five games. We keep it in perspective. We are a good club, we are a proud club and have got some good people.”

It is not the end of the world and that is the key. In the winter we will be looking how every single one of us can come back bigger and better.
