From tomorrow until June 6 Hastings will have its own answer to the Chelsea Flower Show with Uncommon Or Garden at the Observer Building.
The show is curated by Hastings photographer Katya de Grunwald and writer/editor Beth Smith.
Katya said: “Many artists have an almost symbiotic relationship with nature; from Brueghel the Elder’s representations of paradise to Monet’s waterlilies it’s almost always a thing of beauty. Uncommon or Garden gathers artists who reflect on and interrogate the glories of nature in more idiosyncratic ways.”
Uncommon or Garden draws together a group of artists who approach the natural world obliquely. They capture nature as it teems with life and growth, death and decay. The endless cycle of flourishing and decomposing is observed as the artists visualise the passage of time.
They include Ptolemy Mann, Anne Smith and Lisa Hardy. Jim Cooke and Yiorgos Nikiteas are photographers from Brighton. Other artists are John Blakemore, Jodie Carey, Kitty Jenkins, Richard Misrach, and Hormazd Narielwalla.
