A sizzling double bill of rarely-performed Victorian comedies will open at The Stables Theatre next Thursday.

Box and Cox is a fast-paced comedy about the unconventional living arrangement of two bachelors, John Box and James Cox.

Their landlady, Mrs Bouncer, just about makes this arrangement work until the inevitable moment when the two men each discover the truth about their room-mate.

Next on the bill is The Game of Speculation – a story about charming but conniving financial speculator Affable Hawk and his efforts to secure a rich husband for his daughter. Will the business partner who left him holding the bag almost a decade ago return from India? And if he does, will that return be enough to untangle the knotty web of deals and promises Hawk has made to both his creditors and his family?

Tim Wormley-Healing directs these two fast-paced and high-energy plays. The show runs from Thursday October 15 to Saturday October 24 at 7.30pm, with a 3pm matinee on Sunday October 18.

The production is accompanied by an exhibition on Victorian theatre. There are also pre-theatre talks on Friday October 16 (6.30pm), Sunday October 18 (2pm) and Wednesday October 21 (6.30pm) to examine how these Victorian shows relate to the modern world.

Tickets £7.50 for Stables members and groups (£12.50 non-members), with £2 reduction on all first-night and Sunday tickets.
