Three Kings at the Stables Theatre in Hastings

1066 Three Kings is a modern theatrical interpretation of the Battle of Hastings, retold on its 950th anniversary.

As part of the ROOT 1066 festival Michael Punter has created the play to tell the iconic story through a young and lively cast, featuring epic battle scenes and live musical performances, directed by Niall Whitehead and Barbara Ward.

Wulf Godwin (James Slack) and server girl Marie (Jessie Whitehead) narrate the power struggle between Edward the Confessor (Harper Jackson), Harold Godwin (Munro Scott), and William the Conqueror (James Crouch), to illustrate the English side of events in 1066.

The three leads set a high standard for cast and chorus, each becoming convincing (and at times frightening) leaders. Edward’s emotional turmoil in his final moments were tear jerking, especially his confession to his wife Edith. One of the highlights were songs performed by the talented Daisy Estell, and beautifully choreographed dance scenes. The costumes, set, lighting and sound took us back in time, creating the real-yet-unreal world of medieval England .

1066 Three Kings is not only rich in history, but is magical, humorous, emotional and has a sense of pride in our town’s heritage - a fresh interpretation to a well known tale. If you are looking for an evening of surprise, fun, or even education, 1066 Three Kings is on all week at the Stables Theatre.
