FRANK Chaplin goes beyond observing tradition - he creates it and then sustains it year after year.

In 1993, Frank introduced into our December club meeting his own style of the custom of fellowship and good cheer. Frank acts as our host, serving Audrey's home made fruit cake and mince pies to appreciative members. He tops this with 'a cup that cheers but does not inebriate' - this year a choice of port or Southern Comfort.

We toast absent friends by raising our charged wine glasses or a cup of tea. Instead of a speaker, we all speak at once to each other.

Attendance is high and the business meeting that we have at the beginning proves uncontroversial.

Thank you Frank for helping us to end our year in such a warm atmosphere of fellowship and conviviality.

David Wallis' most recent club outing was to the massive Garden Centre and Emporium at Polehill.

As expected, the ladies enjoyed it and even the men they took along with them found something of interest. There were huge koi carp in the aquarium and a wide variety of other exotic pond life. The food department was also worth a visit, especially for their food prepared for taking away. Most people find commercial pies good to look at but liable to cause indigestion: not so those from Polehill.

They travelled well, froze well and in due course they tasted well and left no persistent reminder in the gullet. Some of the most popular ladies' purchases were orchids in a variety of colours and form. Add a good afternoon tea and it was a satisfying afternoon out.
