CANTERBURY-BASED writer and speaker Martin Lloyd was voted the best received speaker for many years by members for his talk entitled 'Passports, Assassins, Traitors and Spies' at the meeting on November 27.

An intriguing probe into the passport stories behind history - assassins who caused the rules to be changed for ever, a spy with a mysterious passport and a traitor, hanged by the passport he should never have had. More than that would give too much of the story away!

Martin answered questions as adroitly as he had delivered his talk, including many on his experiences as an immigration officer.

Very reluctantly chairman Len Sterling brought the questioning to an end by asking John Wilson to propose the vote of thanks on behalf of all present. Definitely not a talk to have missed.

The next event is the annual Christmas lunch on December 18 at our now regular venue - Cooden Beach Golf Club. Bookings to Graham Ellery by December 11.

The first meeting on the 2009 calendar will be held on January 22, at the usual venue, the Bexhill Conservative Club, when the speaker will be Ken Ashmore JP with a talk entitled 'The Criminal Justice System', which will be followed up at a later date with a visit to the local court.
