Bexhill Photographic Club

THE first of the photographic competitions, Projected Digital Images, went ahead without a glitch. This season the club has three premier image competitions - the prints and slides come at a later date.

To judge the four classes we invited along a previous local photographer, Ray Bridges LRPS.CPAGB, now a Maidstone club member.

Ray first evaluated the Creative Class, with 11 images, and said that due to the high quality, he would have to be ultra critical. A lot of inspiration went into the images displayed and it was our chairman, Paul Dunmall, who gained the top mark (20) with Breaking Through

Ray then had the task of judging 19 images in the General Class. A stunning shot taken at night at the Hove cricket ground included a stump tumbling and a bail in the air entitled Out, by Paul Hutchings (19 points).

But this was not quite enough to beat Vanessa Parker’s Best of British, (20) a portly mature couple enjoying a summer’s day on the sand by the sea. What gave the picture impact was that it was shot from the Zenith position, ie, from above.

Following a tea break, Nature and Record classes were judged. The first was dominated by Brian Reeves, whose Female Chalk Hill Blue scored 20, but Bob Butler ran him very close (19) with his Female Common Darter.

The last class of the evening was Record, attracting high marks with an aggregate score of 17.5 separating the 10 contestants. Julie Willard’s Sackville Mansions, although presented pictorially as a letter-box image took the top spot (20).

One of our new members, Peter Bettley, scored 19 for his Herstmonceux Castle, also emblazoned with a pictorial title Blue Dawn.

The photographer winning the accolade for picture of the night was Vanessa Parker, with her seasiders looking and dressing as typical Britons.

The chairman gave the vote of thanks and Ray Bridges said it had been a privilege to appraise such good quality work. Our next meeting is with Rye Camera Club’s Colin Page, giving an illustrated talk on Secret Landscapes.
