Discover Brede's steamy splendour

Brede Steam Engine Society has two events to tempt and delight fans of great steam giants - on Bank Holiday Monday, May 2, and again on Saturday May 7. Both events are free, 10-4pm.

Visit The Giants of Brede in Brede Village near Rye to see something “really special” according to Society chairman John Foxley who said: “Come and see poetry in motion, a display of these wonderful examples of British engineering at its best. They are large water pumping engines designed to provide Hastings with a reliable and safe supply of drinking water from 1904 until the end of steam in 1964. Today Hastings continues to enjoy high quality water but it is supplyed by electric pump rather than these wonderful examples of Victorian expertise.”

The May 7 event will also feature a display of classic stationary engines staged by the Sussex & Kent Weald Stationary Engine Group.
