East Sussex Federation of Townswomen's Guilds - May 9

ON Monday, April 14, ladies from the Townswomen's Guilds from Bexhill-on-Sea, Eastbourne and Hastings gathered at the Cooden Beach Hotel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Federation with lunch.

The President, Mrs Eileen Hawkins, welcomed all the members and introduced our National Chairman, Mrs Sue Smith, the Federation Chairman, Mrs Kathleen Broomhead and the former President, Mrs Rene Parsons.

Mrs Hawkins then gave a warm welcome to six members present who had been with the Townswomen's Guild for fifty years. She followed this with a resume of the events that had taken place over the past years, with regard to the growth of the Guilds.

Mrs Angela Sheppard then reminded us of the local and world events that had taken place fifty years ago, many of us were reminded and remembered so many things; both ladies gave their talks in verse, which added to interest and amusement, and was much appreciated.

A very good luncheon followed. The President then introduced the Speaker, Mr Mel Rees. His tales of his life and hobbies were very humorous, and, by the sound of laughter, were much enjoyed.

A very beautiful cake, depicting the Townswomen's colours, was cut by Mrs Sue Smith, and enjoyed with afternoon tea.

The national chairman then gave the toast to the Federation, and expressed her thanks for such an enjoyable day.

Mrs Rene Parsons - immediate past President closed the day's event with many thanks to those who had arranged it.
