Kathryn closes Southern Sundays

The quartet of discussions, hosted by series creator Jay Clifton, closes with film character actress Kathryn Pogson reading from the work of American novelist and screenwriter Barry Gifford.

In common with previous events in the series, Kathryn will help to promote debate on the inspiration, influences and qualities of Gifford’s work before Wild at Heart, a film based on one of his novels and directed by David Lynch, is shown for the audience.

There will also be a live music performance by the Sandy Dillon Band, featuring ex-Mott the Hoople guitarist Ray Majors, as part of the presentation.

Kathryn Pogson has acted on stage, screen, TV and radio and lives in Sussex. She was the nervous girl with braces in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, played a nun in Danny Boyle’s children’s movie Millions and was also in Neil Jordan’s A Company of Wolves and Breakfast on Pluto.

This year she is in a film called The Arbor, a documentary about the playwright Andrea Dunbar, who died young.

Kathryn was married to Stuart Browne, author of novel and film Dangerous Parking, who sadly died in 1999, aged just 52.

Wild at Heart stars Nicolas Cage as Southern outlaw Sailor Ripley and Laura Dern as his lover Lula Pace Fortune, and follows their bid to escape Lula’s domineering mother, played by Diane Ladd, while pursued by the mob.

The film, also starring Willem Dafoe and Harry Dean Stanton, received mixed reviews on its release, but won the Palme D’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival and earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Ladd as best supporting actress.
