Manor Barn WI - June 20

OUR July meeting began with the very sad news of the death of our president, Paddy Potham who had carried out her duties whilst battling against ill health for quite some time. It was obvious how much we shall miss her by the tributes expressed.

To give us time to come to terms with our loss, it was decided to leave discussion as to the future until our next meeting.

Difficult though it was, the meeting proceeded under the guidance of Joy, as Paddy would, no doubt, have wished.

Members were looking forward to our Strawberry Tea and hoping for fine weather on that day and also when we visit Charleston Farmhouse in August.

We are due to host the next Marshdown Group Meeting in October and Joy asked for support with the arrangements and a good attendance.

Louise had attended the National AGM in Liverpool and gave a detailed report on the proceedings and the results of the voting.

Mary was pleased to report that Tate & Lyle's sugar is all going to be Fair Trade in future - the 6,000 growers in Belize will receive a fair price for their product and many other benefits.

After a short break we welcomed our speaker, Pam Britton who had brought flowers from her garden and produced the most beautiful arrangements whilst chatting to us. It was fortuitous on this day that Pam was an old friend of Manor Barn having been one of our very first speakers.

Our next meeting is on Thursday, July 10 at 10am at St. Peter's Community Centre when Professor Rosemary Hails will pose the question 'G M Crops - Should we be worried?'
