The screenplay was written by Irish novelist Edna O’Brien who adapted it from her novella ‘The Lonely Girl’. This is a love story in the style of ‘kitchen sink’ drama and is the story of a country girl (Rita Tushingham) who moves to Dublin with her friend (Lynne Redgrave) and becomes involved with a married man (Peter Finch).

The book itself was banned in Ireland when it was published because of its frank portrayal of sexual matters. The film was the making of Rita Tushingham and there are great performances also from Peter Finch and Lynne Redgrave.
