Girls With Balls take on the beautiful game

Some major life issues are tackled by Girls With Balls at the White Rock Theatre, on Thursday May 26, at 7.30pm, which comes to Hastings courtesy of the Off The Fence Theatre Company, and is written by Ann Richards and directed by Gary Phillpott.

It’s 2016, the wrecking ball is approaching and Ashley, Britney and Heather must face up to the destruction of their beloved football ground. As the demolition company moves in, the girls stage a last-ditch protest to save their club and fight for what they believe in. This new play is inspired by events from 1921 when the Football Association banned women from playing at affiliated grounds. The ban was finally lifted in 1971. Off the Fence’s Artistic Director, Gary Phillpott, said: “Girls with Balls will make you think, make you laugh and make you challenge your own views on what is acceptable should you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re forced to fight for what you think is right. “

This new play was inspired by the little known fact that the Football Association imposed a 50 year ban on women’s football from 1921, mainly because the women’s game was becoming too popular.

“With this as the backdrop, Girls with Balls shines a light on women’s lives today, as well as a look back to 1921 and asks, what’s changed? Girls with Balls should appeal to anyone interested in new writing for theatre, football and sport, fair play and feminism.”
