A little Haw-Haw comedy in Bexhill

The ghost of Lord Haw Haw - also known as William Joyce, the last man to be hanged for treason in Britain - is to be revived in a new black comedy being previewed for free at Milligan's Bar in Wilton Road, Bexhill, on Thursday August 25 at 8pm.

The play, Haw Haw, is the brainchild of Brighton-based writers and performers Ross Gurney-Randall and Doug Devaney, and tells of Joyce’s childhood in Ireland, his attempts to become part of the establishment in England and his final decision to broadcast propaganda for Hitler from Germany. The performance is a rehearsed reading, with Gurney-Randall and Devaney working from script as though in a radio show, with added sections of live performance, pre-recorded broadcasts, song, sketches and satire. The performance is part of the research the two are undertaking, supported by The Arts Council’s Grants for the Arts scheme and audience members will be invited to give their comments towards a full-blown production and tour later in the year. The pair chose Milligans because of Bexhill’s legacy from the war and also to mark the fact Joyce was raised in Ireland.
