Working towards concert with masterclass in singing

At the Recital Room, Fairlight Hall on Saturday July 30 an enthusiastic audience was treated to some outstanding performances from the amateur and semi-professional singers selected by the international opera singer, Louise Winter, for a '˜Voiceworks' masterclass.

Louise had been looking for ‘singers of all abilities’ and the mix was exactly right ranging from mature singers, with long experience of amateur

performances, to semi-professionals working occasionally as soloists or teachers and included a 16 year old ‘A’ level student who had never had a

singing lesson.

At the end of the day Louise and the singers gave a short concert of solos, duets and trios from Schubert to jazz. For the audience, watching the mechanics of singing being explained and the voices being gently coaxed to better performances was a revelation and Louise proved to be a highly entertaining teacher. Full marks to the brave participants for singing in front of a large audience whilst being closely scrutinized by Louise!

More masterclasses are planned for the autumn and all monies raised will go to Battle Memorial Hall’s piano appeal. Auditions for the masterclasses will be in the Wynn Room, Battle Memorial Hall, on November 11 with the masterclasses on November 19 in the main hall. For details email [email protected].
