Trading Standards Information and Advice: Scamnesty 2012

Throughout the month of February it was East Sussex’s Scamnesty month which invited residents across the county to send in their scam mail and all related paperwork.

On the 15th February 2012 our very own Officer Tom Cook went onto the Neil Pringle Sussex Breakfast show to highlight one East Sussex resident whose’ quick thinking caught out the very scammer that was trying to defraud her.

The resident recorded the telephone call that she received from someone pretending to be from Microsoft and when the scammer didn’t get his own way he became abusive towards the resident. Tom again was on the radio on the 20th February 2012 speaking on the Sarah Gorrell drive time show about the subject of email scams.

- “You have won the Microsoft Lottery”

- Microsoft “requires credit card information to validate your copy of Windows”

- An unsolicited email message with ‘security updates’

- Someone from “Microsoft Tech Support” calls to fix your computer.
