The Guestling school said it saw the best results in its history, with a record 45 per cent of all grades being at the top A* - A level and 73 per cent receiving A* to B grades, results which also top the national averages.

In a year that has been disrupted by the cancellation of exams students due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, results have been calculated using teacher predictions alongside a standardisation formula which takes it account, among other things, a school’s previous performance in exams.

Michael Shaw, Buckswood’s co-principal, said: “We are delighted for our students and staff, in a time of great difficulty for all.

“We knew we had an exceptionally strong cohort this year, but there has been much uncertainty over this year’s grading system, so we are pleased that the exam boards have agreed with our assessment of our student’s capabilities.

“Our predictions were based on a number of factors, including student performance during assessments and mock exams, assignments they had completed over the two-year period and on the excellent work our students continued to produce during the period of lockdown.

“These strong results also mean it is likely that many of our student’s will be able to attend their first choice university and move on to the next stage of their education.”
