The Gatehouse forms part of a castellated stone-built gateway, the accommodation being on the right hand side with a 30ft archway room spanning the road, with views north, south and east.

Built in 1830 by James Burton, the property formed the entrance and tollgate to the new seaside town of St Leonards and is now part of the Burtons’ St Leonards conservation area.

It was at one time occupied by Cecil Rhodes’ sister and it is known that he often stayed in the house.

Later bought by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, author of King Solomon’s Mines, who wanted to be nearer to his friend Rudyard Kipling.
