Marcel Lucont at Stand Up Hastings, Thursday 28 July, Venuu, 7.30pm, £7/£5

BRAZEN self-confidence is an essential part of any comedian’s toolkit, but UK comic Alexis Dubus has gone a step further than most.

His character, the posturing Frenchman Marcel Lucont, is built around an iron sense of self-belief, and a defiant reluctance to accept criticism.

Using the cliched image of a drunken Frenchman, who believes he is one of the world’s foremost lovers, Dubus has played Marcel Lucont to rave reviews since 2009.

On Thursday (July 28), Dubus bring his foul-mouthed Frenchman to Stand Up Hastings, previewing his latest Fringe outing, called: Etc. A Chat Show.

The French raconteur specialises in “bawdy chansons and exquisite sex poetry”, but his current tour sees him tackle the chat show format, thriving on quick-fire witty repartee.

Dubus himself has a strong comedy pedigree, including appearances in Chris Morris’ cult satire Nathan Barley. As Lucont, he published a book, called What We French Think Of You British (And Where You Are Going Wrong), which gives a flavour of his brilliantly brusque style.
