The five-month long exhibition will showcase some of the artist’s most famous works including the Marilyn Diptych (1962), a painting comprising two canvases, each with 25 repetitions of the image of Marilyn Monroe.

This is considered to be one of the world’s most important works of contemporary art.

Also among the almost 150 works to be displayed, are prints, portrait paintings, stitched photographs, polaroid self portraits, posters, and drawings from as early as the 1940s.

Sally Ann Lycett, Head of Communications at the De La Warr Pavilion, said: “This is our blockbuster exhibition. The message is that Warhol is in Bexhill and that is a big thing.

“The exhibition is running until the end of February to give everyone time to see it.”

There is also to be a companion exhibition curated and devised by Jean Wainwright in the rooftop foyer at the Pavilion, consisting of a sound installation with recordings made over an 11-year period to provide an insight into Andy Warhol through the voices of others.

Throughout the course of the exhibition, a programme of music, live performance, film, events and workshops inspired by Warhol, taking place at the Pavilion.

Checking Out Warhol, a 10-week course run by artist Sharon Haward and beginning on September 26, is part of this programme.
