1066 Specials Challenge Cup

Chelsea Blues came to Bexhill for a football tournament with 1066 Specials at the weekend.

The challenge cup was hotly contested by two teams from both sides, each playing three matches.

All the players were 16 years and older, with 12 footballers from Chelsea and 16 from the Bexhill-based Specials.

The event took place indoors at Bexhill College on Sunday, watched by families and supporters from both clubs.

Founder Harold Lawrence, now chairman of Trustees, said: "The teams are playing for the 1066 Specials Harold Lawrence Cup. The idea is to set up a link with Chelsea, so we have a game every year with them, and we also like to think we will be able to visit their training ground and meet some of their premiership players. We are hoping they will send a player down to see us as well - one of their big names. We look forward to many years - but this is the first.

"We have always wanted a trophy in the Chelsea cabinet - especially with our name on it!"

The 1066 Specials met the Chelsea team with mascot 11 year old Sam Atkinson who is a pupil of Filsham Valley school. Mum Claire said he "loved" the experience, and added: "Sam is football mad.

"He has been with 1066 Specials since about July - this is the only team that would accept him. 1066 let him play in his chair, and they accept him the same as everybody else. His friend Keegan Hutton was playing here, and his mum suggested we come too."

The home team was coached by Colin Taylor, who said: "I think this is a brilliant event. It is giving opportunity to special needs children and adults to get together and play football. That is what the aim of the club is. As long as everyone is getting a game of football...that is what I like to see."

Other coaches helping out were Jonathan Haddock, Ben Elphick, Steve Wilson and Sophie Rost who was also celebrating her 17th birthday.
