11,000 homes still await green wheelie bins

ELEVEN thousand properties in Rother are still without the promised green wheelie bins for the removal of compostible garden waste. Some 16,000 have been issued.

In answer to a question posed on his Ask The Leader slot on the www.rother.gove.uk council website, Rother leader Cllr Carl Maynard says: "Our green bin service is aimed at properties that need it. 16,600 households already have green bins.

"There are some 6,000 flats and houses in multiple occupation that either do not have gardens or have communal gardens that would not be served by the domestic green waste service.

"There are also almost 3,000 properties in our citadels and town centre areas (typically properties without front curtilages that do not have sufficient space for wheeled bins) and where the service cannot be provided because the large collection vehicles cannot access the narrow cobbled roads.

"We estimate that there are another 2,000 houses with small patio or courtyard areas that do not need the green waste service. The district also includes a high number of rural properties where the gardens or grounds are very large and so commercial gardening and green waste disposal services are used by the owners.

"Furthermore there are equally high numbers of properties that are located on farms and so the small amounts of domestic green waste produced have always been composted locally.

"So I will qualify my answer to your question by saying that that the number of properties that still need green bins is approximately 11,000 and it is this number that plans are in hand to provide as soon as possible."
