44 parking tickets issued in one day

POLICE have responded to complaints that all-day parkers are flouting town centre two-hour restrictions with a day-long parking purge.

More than 40 tickets were issued in an operation which saw Bexhill's lone Traffic Warden receiving temporary reinforcements.

Now police warn erring motorists can expect further unannounced crack-downs after the success of Wednesday's blitz.

Sergeant Trish Reeve-Fowkes said yesterday: "In response to complaints from the Chamber of Commerce and residents of Bexhill about parked vehicles over-staying the limited two-hour parking restrictions in the town a number of police officers together with the Traffic Warden carried out checks in the town centre.

"As a result of this, 44 parking tickets were issued to vehicles that had parked longer than two hours in two-hour zones."

Sergeant Reeve-Fowkes said: "Checks like this will be carried out again in the future as it is obvious that some people parking in the town do not adhere to the parking restrictions imposed."

Sgt Dave Costigan said: "The only thing that has hindered us previously is having only one Traffic Warden. We put one sergeant and four PCs on this operation and we will be doing it again. This was not a one-off."

Chamber of Commerce president Malcolm Mitcheson said: "We are pleased to see the police taking an interest in keeping traffic moving in the town."
