Ambulance group unveils wish list

DELIGHTED volunteers have been busy this week moving into long-sought new headquarters.

Since last summer, Bexhill Division of St John Ambulance has operated in church-hall limbo after the headquarters at the movement's High House campsite off Ninfield Road which it had enjoyed since the early post-war era was sold.

Now St John has entered into a leasing agreement with Rother District Council on light industrial premises in Beeching Close.

The move will give the unit easier access, a presence near the town centre and the chance once more to recruit cadets.

An official opening ceremony is planned for Saturday, March 27.

The new headquarters offers ample accommodation including a large lecture/training area, offices and storage plus garaging for the unit's ambulance and 4x4 ambulance and emergency trailer.

But there still remains a "wish list" of furniture and fittings which must be found.

Acting unit leader Jill Andrews appealed for help in completing the headquarters.

She is hoping that Observer readers may be able to help.

"Sometimes offices downsize or change furniture and we may be able to benefit if such items are in good condition."

The unit is seeking:

'¢ A desk with drawers

'¢ A chair for the desk

'¢ A large (4ftx5ft) wall-hanging display cabinet

'¢ Two or three small arm chairs or a two-seater sofa and chair - leather or plastic (not fabric)

'¢ A vacuum cleaner

'¢ A small photocopier

'¢ A tea trolley

'¢ A wall clock

Jill adds tongue-in-cheek that the unit's wish list also includes a new ambulance.

The present vehicle is approaching the movement's 10-year replacement limit.

Volunteers who have maintained the unit's range of services to the public have worked under uncertainty and difficulty since being sold that the old headquarters and the High House campsite would have to be sold because of their high cost.

Now Jill says: "This is an exciting time for Bexhill and there is such a difference in the morale of the members."

Anyone able to offer surplus items is invited to contact Mrs Andrews on 213210.
