Award for local teen

A Hastings teenager has been presented with the Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award in recognition of her work helping girls living in the world’s poorest countries.

Georgie Warner, aged 15, is a member of Plan UK’s Youth Advisory Panel (YAP), a charity which helps girls in the world’s poorest countries and demands equal rights for them.

The YAP provides a youth perspective on Plan UK’s activities, ensuring children are at the heart of everything it does.

The Outstanding Young Person of the Month award is sponsored by Sussex Coast College Hastings and the Hastings Observer Series.

The award is presented to someone aged 18 and under who has excelled in some way. This could be in sport, their academic studies, or if they have performed an important role on a voluntary basis in their own home or the wider community.

Dedicated Georgie has already had a meeting with Amber Rudd MP to discuss poverty, climate change and inequality, and has spoken to the media to raise awareness about forced child marriage and female genital mutilation.

She has also spoken to her peers and teachers in school about how they can get involved with Plan UK, and put up posters and leaflets around school to highlight the charity’s campaign against forced child marriage.

Lauren Fry, Marketing Projects Executive at Sussex Coast College Hastings, said: “Georgie should be congratulated for dedicating her time to the causes supported by Plan UK and is an inspiration to her peers, which is why we’ve chosen her as an Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award winner.”
