Awards For All local support

An archery club has hit the bullseye after scoring a £3,634 Awards for All grant that will help meet growing demand.

The project is one of three in Rother and 76 in the South East sharing funding worth 536,947 in the latest round of awards.

The 1066 Archery Club is now on target to equip its growing membership with new equipment, a repair workshop, and an indoor range.

Formed six years ago, the club's current membership stands at 47 and counting, with members of all ages and abilities meeting weekly to take part in target archery, field archery, training courses and social get togethers.

Craigan Hyde-Barnett, Spokesperson and Coach, said: "Archery is a fantastic sport that is increasing in popularity. We have 47 members but more and more people are asking to get involved. For the youngsters, it can teach self-control and help improve concentration and general behaviour. For the adults it's a chance to challenge oneself and to compete against others in a relaxed environment.

"Archery's popularity is growing so rapidly that we need new equipment to allow for new members. Along with the additional bosses, bows and shafts to cater for larger numbers of people attending our sessions, we will also build an equipment workshop where we can make strings and mend the bows. Our members will get an insight into the technical side of archery, and learn how to construct wooden arrows and re-fletch them. We will also be able to purchase a shooting range and generator for indoor archery."

Other Rother schemes receiving funding are Levetts Lane Residents Association, who will receive 9,998 to buy IT equipment, and Beckley Parish Council who will spend 10,000 on the drainage of a popular recreation ground.
