BATS AGM

The show must go on even though dwindling audiences meant losses last year for Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS).

The group held its Annual General Meeting at the Granary Barn Broadoak Lane where chairman Trish Daly welcomed members and reported on the productions in 2008. Although these individually were well received and performed, regrettably there were lower audience numbers than usual.

Trish thanked the retiring committee for their hard work over the previous year in various roles. She mentioned the social side of the Society which has been flourishing and is much enjoyed. The Treasurer presented the accounts for 2008 which showed a disappointing loss for the Society over the previous year; however he was optimistic about prospects for 2009 as there were plans to use some new ideas and strategies.

The society will concentrate on just three productions this year, one of which they will take to Battle and Eastbourne as well as Bexhill.

Four members of the committee retired and a new committee was formed. Trish continues as Chairman, and Keith Harwood and Eric Stevens as Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Secretary. New committee members, Sheila Harper, Michael Turnbull, Kate Walsgrove and Hilary Webb join John Brown and Chas Stewart for the coming year. Eric Stevens spoke at the end of the evening on the changing scenes and fortunes of amateur theatre in our area, and everyone present felt that there was much room for thought about its future.
