Battle Abbey pupils travel in style

It was a step back in time for Years 3 and 5 at Battle Abbey Prep School.

Dressed in fine Victorian style pupils headed off to Tenterden and the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway.

They were taken onto the steam engine Rolvenden which took them in a 114 year old carriage from Tenterden to Bodiam Station.

Steve Croft, Year 5 teacher, said: "There were admiring looks from other travellers who, I think, were secretly jealous as they had not dressed for the occasion. The return trip was, as the outward journey, full of tales and information although the recommended reading of 'Great Railway Disasters' didn't fill us with confidence. After a packed lunch and a visit to the museum of Colonel Stevens' railway, the day finished with a visit to the signal box. Mrs Bailey, having spent 40 minutes in the box, was already qualified to run the whole of the railway system for the south east of England. All the children agreed that this was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative day out."
