Beatles Day success

BEATLES fans young and old flocked to the White Rock Theatre for Beatles Day 8 - raising £8,185 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Despite numbers being slightly down on last year, organiser Pete Prescott heralded the day a success, with more than 1,400 revellers in the crowd to watch the 190 musicians who took part.

The musicians made up 45 different acts, all of whom played a short set of three Beatles songs on one of two stages during the 10-hour event.

Among the highlights was a touching and beautiful performance from Chloe Du Pre and a high quality set from jazz vocalist Lianne Carroll.

St Leonards-based comedian Steve Furst added a flavour of Latin America to proceedings. Performing with Blair Mackichan under the name Submarino Marino, the funnyman had everyone smiling by giving his choice of Beatles songs a South American twist.

A Shadows tribute band, called Lost For Words, gave proceedings and authentic look while Rotherbeat superband The Off Beatles produced a barn-storming set.

Made up of three members of NME darlings Mumm-Ra and madcap Youngplan drummer Jonathan Claire, the foursome were taking a break from their current UK tour and performing at Beatles Day for the fourth time.

Dancers from Hastings Stage Studio also made an impact, performing to the Earth Wing And Fire version of Gotta Get You Into My Life.

Pete Prescott, whose nine-year-old daughter Poppy was one of a host of young performers, praised all the performers and thanked the staff at the White Rock for their help.

He said: "The standard of performance was superb. We might have had fewer people through the doors but this was one of the most enjoyable Beatles Days so far and the quality of musicians was amazing."
