Teachers and pupils at a Bexhill school are celebrating after a positive Ofsted report said it is doing the right things to get a ‘good’ rating.

Bexhill High Academy is currently rated as ‘requires improvement’ after an inspection in April but is seemingly on the road to improvement after a visit on September 28.

Principal Heidi Brown said the education regulator will not visit the academy again for about 2 years.

“We can now get on with the job of ensuring that by 2017 we are judged by Ofsted as a ‘good’ school, a stepping stone to becoming an ‘outstanding’ school in 2019,” she said.

Ms Brown believes Bexhill High can become the school of first choice for Bexhill after having more than 500 people attend an open evening last month.

Inspector Lesley Farmer visited the academy as part of the monitoring regime for schools with their rating.

She said she saw students benefitting from new laboratories which meant they were enjoying their learning and could concentrate without interruption.

Ms Brown said the seven new labs were already having an impact on their quality of teaching and the students learning.

The students began the new school year in their new uniform and their smart appearance impressed Ms Farmer.

“During this visit, students presented as smart and purposeful,” she said.

“Early indications suggest that their attitudes to learning are improving in response to the improvements to the environment and to the quality of teaching.”

She concluded: “Senior leaders and trustees are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the recent section 5 inspection in order to become a good school.”
