A Bexhill fish and chip shop is ‘frying’ for the accolade of best new chippy in the UK after reaching the top ten.
Athena’s Fish and Chips on Western Road has been shortlisted for the Best Newcomer Award in the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards.
Owner Nick Damurakis was overwhelmed by the news and explained how his shop made the top ten.
“[We did it] by being driven, wanting to provide the best product on the market, using the best produce and sustainable fish we can source back to the boats,” he said.
“Bexhill has some amazing food places already so to add another one is all good.
“The public have warmed to us but the people of Bexhill know quality – we’ve gone from strength to strength.
Nick’s fish shop have already won awards for sustainablity and quality of their food.
This award requires fish shops to have opened before October 1, 2013.
Athena’s has only been open for four months and Nick praised the work of his staff for achieving so much in such a short space of time.
“We’ve done so well,” he said.
The ten will become three when a mystery shopper visits the shops and tries the food for themselves.
The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony at The Lancaster London Hotel on January 20.
Award sponsor Andrew Marriott, Brand and Marketing Manager for Frymax, said: “The most enjoyable aspect of sponsoring the Best Newcomer Award is being able to see new shops such as Athena’s Fish & Chips, who are driven with a passion to produce great tasting fish and chips for their customers.”
The awards are organised by Seafish, the UK’s authority on seafood.
Chief executive Paul Williams said: “The aim of the National Fish & Chip Awards has always been to showcase the very best fish and chip businesses and individuals in the UK, while setting incredibly high standards for the industry to aspire to.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of celebrating and rewarding new entrants into the industry; there are some incredibly talented individuals that are dedicating their careers to ensure the future of our industry continues to thrive and that must be applauded.
“I’d like to offer up my congratulations to the shortlisted shops and wish them the best as they prepare to continue their quest towards becoming a finalist, but also thank them for upholding our high industry standards and helping us to reinforce the UK’s reputation as the home of the world’s best fish and chips.”
