The Terminus Road surgery’s inspection on March 15, was a follow-up to a previous visit on November 17, which highlighted legal breaches despite receiving a ‘good’ overall.

The check-up found the action plan the doctors said it would implement had been put into effect and now met the legal standards on child safeguarding training, risk assessments and recruitment checks.

Chief inspector of general practice Steve Field said in his February report: “Staff assessed patients’ needs and delivered care in line with current evidence based guidance.

“Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to deliver effective care and treatment.

Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment.”

Thornwood was praised for having well-trained staff who protected people at risk and had developed ‘caring relationships’.

“The home was well maintained and communal lounges comfortable and homely. However communal bathrooms and some peoples’ bedrooms were stark and unwelcoming,” the report says.

“This was identified as an area for improvement and on the second day we found that improvements had already been progressed.

“Not everyone could tell us of their experiences, but those that could spoke positively of the home and commented they felt safe and well cared for.

“Our own observations and the records we looked at reflected the positive comments people made. However some people also told us they were ‘bored’.

“We were told that ‘not a lot goes on.’”

The Turkey Road care home was told to improve its caring aspect as residents’ rooms ‘did not reflect their preferences, interests or family involvement’, otherwise it was praised throughout.
